About Us

Then and Now

Us in early 2006
Us at Garry's Point in spring of 2006.
The story about how we met is a bit unique, and if you'd like to know more, feel free to ask us in person! We had our first date at 99 Chairs at the University of British Columbia on a windy and chilly late winter day after our classes had finished for the day. In the next two weeks, we got to know each other better and went out to eat, walked around the seawall, and spent a lot of time talking and getting to know each other. On March 11, 2006, after a long evening of searching for (and finding!) Allen's wallet, dining at Earl's and playing pool in Richmond, Allen asked Sarah out on the drive home. Since then? We've been inseparable!
When we met, Allen was working towards a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering in his 4th year, and Sarah towards a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology in her 3rd year. Now Allen is working full-time for a consulting engineering company downtown and working towards his Professional Engineering (PEng.) designation. Sarah continues to attend UBC as a Medical Undergraduate student in her 2nd year (of 4) to becoming a Medical Doctor.

We have since bought a condo in Fairview and Sarah lives there with our 6 month old Pomeranian, Captain. He is our 'baby' and definitely gets a lot of attention. Even better? He was born on our dating anniversary of 2008!

Our Engagement Story
Written from Sarah's perspective, the Monday after our engagement on December 2nd, 2007.

On Sunday, Allen said he was taking me somewhere special as I will be in studying mode for the next three weeks during my exam period. I agreed, but it turns out it was snowing so hard, and I was worried he wasn’t going to be able to make it to my place. He insisted though, and came and picked me up in the afternoon. In the car, he had a pair of gloves & a pair of mittens, and a teddy bear that said “Grouse Mountain – The Peak of Vancouver” on his shirt. This was a giveaway to where we were going of course, he knows how much I still love stuffed animals.

We drove carefully up to the mountain in the snow, and took the gondola up to the top of the mountain. It was absolutely beautiful – white powdery snow and snow-topped trees. As it was still snowing hard, he bought me a toque @ the gift shop. We then went ice skating at the outdoor rink; thankfully neither of us took any spills! We wandered around, visited Santa Claus just for fun and checked out the various Christmas trees at the lodge.

We then went to the beautiful restaurant that looks over the mountain – the Observatory. Waiting for me was a dozen of the largest, longest stemmed roses I had ever seen – red, my favourite. We had a nice quiet meal, and I was wondering what was up as Allen seemed quieter than usual, and a bit jittery.

Ring My engagement ring.

After dinner, we went for a walk, to a point that outlooks the mountain & the city below. He hugged me tightly and told me how much he loved me. He then got on one knee, took the ring out from his pocket and asked “will you marry me?” I said yes, and we shared a kiss overlooking the mountain. Soon after, we began planning our wedding for June 2009!
